to pull a trick on the sleeping town so had the telephone operator blow the fire siren at about sunday morning immediately after the whistle blew people appeared on the streets as if by magic some of them not fully dressed the fire truck went up and down the street its siren blo blowing wingo but going nowhere in particular the crowd soon realized a joke had been played on them and returned home and most of them to bed again the who pulled the stunt were the ones who worked hardest on the celebration and after their all night vigil preparing for the barbecue felt a need of stimulation the trick did it and they went about their work in a livelier manner ARMISTICE celt celebration BRATION GOES OVER BIG the celebration in salina went over with a bang or maybe several bangs last monday after the rodeo which was held in redmond everyone came to salina where they saw how the machine guns worked and where the barbecue took place thirty five hundred bundred buns and about seventy five loaves of bread were pressed into service in about two hours the barbecue meat which consisted of two beeves two turkeys and several chickens with carrots onions and all the trimmings J was completely given out by seven and the gallons of coffee used would almost put out a fire at eight the legion fight commenced at the opera house and jarvis martin who had bad charge of it provided good entertainment for that part of the lays days program the main main event was kid ivie versus pa payne pame me of salt lake payne who is only seventeen vears old won the bout after six rounds of hard bard fighting the semi semi windup wind vind up was between hopkins of salina and christensen of gunnison the gunnison lad won the laurels in this event the preliminaries were also excellent ec ellent wilson won the de decision casl on over flanigan in one of these bouts parker and curtis who were among the curtain risers provided a lot of laughs while the battle royal was as usual one of the best parts of the entertainment an extremely large crowd was present at the fight and also at the dance which was held at the opera house immediately after the fights MUTUAL PRESIDENT GIVEN FAREWELL leland payne who has been mutual president in the salina first ward the past three years was given a farewell party sunday evening at the ward chapel prior to his leaving for california after an interesting program a light lunch was served the building was packed with friends and coworkers mr payne stated that he be lad had no de definite finita plans plan and although he and mrs payne left for california early this week they may locate some place nearer home mr payne was manager of the local telephone company until it came into the new owners hands JUNIORS WIN IN CARNIVAL CONTEST the janior class won in the carni carnival contest friday and supplied the most popular boy and girl for the year miss florence herbert and wallace poulson won the coveted position friday at noon the juniors lad had one hundred and thirty eight dollars to their credit which was a good deal higher before the evening was out the fresnics came second in the contest with the third this was rather disappointing for them because the seniors usually are arc the winners the carnival started at six friday evening and lasted asted till nine various amusements were taken in by eager children and gay groups the fish pond drew tile the kiddies as honey draws bees while the boxing bout proved a great attraction to the older ones after nine the scene of activities changed to the social hall and from then till one the bost of the season was in full swing refreshments of various kinds were sold during in g the dance which helped to swell ell the already full money bag the carnival was held to obtain money to
