Show Efficiency in Law The Old Bailey in London is the most famous criminal court in the world. And in the opinion of James M. Hepbron who writes on it in the Baltimore Sun, it is likewise the most efficient. There are many things in the letter of English law that would not appeal to liberty-loving Americans. But in its administration, and the swiftness with which justice is meted to offenders, offend-ers, it must enlist our admiration. Pettyfogging technicalities, delays, tricks, mob-sentiment either for or against an accused, are not tolerated Commcn sense and wisdom dominate the entire proceedings, and decisions ceme quickly and fairly. This country does not need more laws further restricting law-abiding citizens in the hope of preventing crime, because criminals obey no laws. We need less legislation, better enforcement en-forcement of existing laws, surer punishment pun-ishment and scientific study of conditions con-ditions which produce crime and a program for correcting such conditions. |
