Show Investigate Radio i The Federal Radio Commission would be authorized by a resolution resolu-tion of Senator Couzens, Republican Repub-lican of Michigan, to make a survey sur-vey of the. uses of radio for commercial com-mercial advertising and to report on the feasibility of government ownership and operation of all broadcasting facilities. The Senator thinks there is much dissatisfaction caused by the present use of the ether for advertising purposes and he wants the Commission to report fully on the extent of such use, what plans might be adopted to limit or eliminate such advertising and what has been done in other countries along this line. He also wants information concerning the investments and profits of representative repre-sentative stations and to know all available facts bearing upon government gov-ernment ownership and operation of broadcasting facilities. The radio will grow in importance impor-tance and to secure its proper use is a vital necessity. There are only limited number of channels chan-nels available for broadcasting and It is entirely right and proper that the government protect the ownership of these avenues of communication for the benefit of the public at large. No private should be allowed to take possession posses-sion of the air for selfish purposes. If the government owned or controlled the broadcasting stations sta-tions it would be possible by a judicious regulation of programs offered to furnish every radio listener lis-tener with a variety of programs and if these were coming from pawerful stations it would not be necessary to broadcast any of them frcm a large number of individual in-dividual plants. Certain stations could be devoted to certain classes of programs and the listener could very readily tune in and secure se-cure exactly the kind of program he desired. Under present private operations this is not possible because be-cause the broadcasting stations have to offer a popularized pre grom in order tc attract listeners and make their station valuable for advertising purposes. |
