Show Some Income Tax Questions (Note: The Salt Lake Telegram has compiled the following questions, ques-tions, which have been answered :"- by the state tax commission and presented for the benefit of th people of the state): Q Must a person under 21 years of age pay an income tax? A A single person under 21 years of age earning more than $1000 net a year must pay the income in-come tax on the amount over the ' $1000. A married person under 21 years old, living with the husband or wife, must pay an income tax on anything over $2000 net. Q Must a person under 21 yea-s of age pay the filing fee? A Single persons under 21 who pay no income tax do not pay the filing fee. Neither do married . persons under that age who pay no income tax. Eut persons under 21 years of age who pay an in- " come tax must also pay the filing fee. Q Who else pays the filing fees? A Everybody over 21 years old must pay the filing fee, regardless regard-less of whether an income tax in paid or not, except that married women living with their husbands -. and having no independent income ;,: do not have to pay the fee. ; Neither do the insane, Idiots, the infirm, indigent or wards of the 6tate. Students attending stats institutions and in good standing in those institutions do not pay J. he filing fee. Q Do students In private instl-: instl-: . tutions have to pay the income : tax and filing fee? : A There are no exceptions In these cases and all students over . 21 years of age in any private ; school must pay the filing fee and also an income tax if otherwise liable for the tax. '; Q Suppose a person is single, but has a dependent and has a net income of $1300 for. the year. What is his status? A The fact that his net income was more than $1000 for the year makes him eligible for the filing . of the return. That fact that he has a dependent and only $1300 inccme makes it unnecessary for him to pay a tax. However, he must pay his filing fee of $1.00 and send in his blanks properly filled out. Q Suppose a wife has no sep--: arate income and her chief occu-pation occu-pation is home-making, hew ' ; should the Question No. 4 in form 40-A be answered? The question ..... is, "Is this a Joint return of hus-band hus-band and wife?" A In that case the answer would be "Yes," and the next question about whether or not the wife has a separate Income would be "No." Q Would It be necessary for the wife to pay a filing fee in this case? A No, only the husband would be required to pay the tax In the case mentioned. Q When does a wife pay a filing fee? A When she has a separate income. in-come. Q Suppose a wife has a separate separ-ate income. Can she file a Joint return with her husband? A Yes. Q Will she have to file a sep-crate sep-crate return on her own account. A Yes, and sho will have to pay her filing fee. But she will not have to fill out the blanks of gross income, deductions, etc. All that will be taken care of In the joint return. Q Is it possible for a single person with one dependent to have a $2000 personal exemption'.' A Yes, thj "head of the family" fam-ily" is entitled to a $2000 personal exemption. A single man with one dependent may be the head of the family. Q How do you determine who is the "head of the family?" A Just as the federal government govern-ment does. A person must be the head of the family in fact. We prefer to answer yes or no on specific cases rather than interpret inter-pret a universal rule. |
