Show I Major Hines Assumes Army Duties Washington, Major General John j L. Hires, who until last Saturday was deputy chief of staff, has taken over the duties- of chief of staff of the United States, relinquished by General Gen-eral Pershing. retired. Brigadiei General Dennis E. Nolan, former as Mstant chief of staff, becomes deputy chief of staff, taking the vacancy -rented by Hines' promotion. Hines has a gallant record of svrvice. Born at White Sulphur Springs. W. Ya , in 18oS, he entered West Point and graduated grad-uated in 1891, being commissioned in 'he Second cavalry. He fought in the Minnish-Amorioan war and in the Philippine insurrection. In the World war he commmanded the First infam try brigade, receiving both the D. S. C. nrd the D. S. M. for his sen-ices. |
