Show SOLDIER AND SAILOR INSURANCE The soldiers' and sailors' war-insurance war-insurance bill, the first step in Government Gov-ernment insurance, and what is pronounced pro-nounced the most generous effort on the part of any nation to care for the dependents of its fighting men, was passed by the lower House of Congress Thursday night, September 13, by a vote of 319 to nothing. The bill as passed by the House follows almost exactly the lines laid down in the plan of Army insurance worked out by Secretary McAdoo and his coadjutors and embodied in a draft of a bill approved by President Wilson and presented to Congress for action. The press of the country seems to think that the unanimous approval given to the bill by the lower House of Congress is thoroughly representative represen-tative of the feeling of the whole country. Secretary McAdoo's comment was as follows: "The unanimous passage by the House of Representatives or the bill for the compensation and insurance of our soldiers and sailors is a distinct dis-tinct triumph tor justice and humanity. human-ity. It is the most conspicuous and advanced step ever taken by any r.ation for the protection of its soldiers sol-diers and sailors and their dependents. depen-dents. The prompt, passage of this bill by the Senate will satisfy the heart and conscience of uplifted America." |
