Show BAN Oil EXPORTS TO BETIGHTENED SMUGGLING OF FOOD FROM UNITED 6TATES THROUGH HOLLAND HOL-LAND TO GERMANY REVEALED. Appeals for Supplies Will Be Disregarded Disre-garded Unless Ironclad Assurances Are Given That Teutons Will in No Way Profit. Washington. Evidence that large quantities of fats and other large imports im-ports from the United States are being be-ing smuggled into Germany on a much larger scale than has been even intimated before was brought to light here on September 30. As a result it was stated authoritatively authorita-tively that the ban on exports to Holland Hol-land and other northern neutrals would be drawn even tighter than in the past. The attitude of the United States will be that she cannot afford to have her supplies find their way into Germany Ger-many to bolster up the strength of the soldiers wno shortly will be face to face with American troops on the western west-ern frout. Tlie plea of Holland and other neutrals neu-trals that they cannot exist without American exports will be disregarded entirely unless ironclad assurances are given that Germany will not profit pro-fit in any way thereby. I Situation Serious, j It was admitted here that the sltu- ation is fraught with serious possibilities possi-bilities and may result in a marked change in the relations between this country and the Netherlands. Holland maintains that she cannot exist without with-out certain exports from Germany anc! that these exports cannot be gotten unless she gives in return a large percentage per-centage of the fats raised in her own country, making it vitally necessary that the deficit be supplied by imports im-ports from the United States. Not only is it extremely unlikely that further supplies of foodstuffs and fats will be allowed to reach Holland, but the ban will not be lifted on cattle cat-tle feed. By this step Holland will be forced to slaughter a large pep centage of her herds and supplies of fats to Germany necessarily will fall off. |
