Norwegian Steamer Sunk and All of Crew Lost. London. The British admiralty announced an-nounced Friday that the Norwegian steamship Belridge, carrying petroleum petrole-um in bulk, was torpedoed in the English channel off Folkestone. The Belridge came into The Downs ear Deal, with her foredeck awash. Eighteen of her crew landed there. Pieces of the torpedo were found aboard her. The ship filled with water fast after she was hit, but her fires were drawn in time to prevent a boiler explosion. When it seemed certain that the vessel ves-sel was about to founder the captain ordered the boats lowered. A force of volunteers remained with the captain, and just when it appeared ap-peared that the tanker was going to sink two Dover tugs came in sight. They got lines aboard the badly damaged dam-aged vessel and towed her to The Downs. |
