Show ENRAGED STRIKERS ! SLAY SIXOFFICERS HOP PICKERS FIRE UPON OFFICERS OFFI-CERS WHO HAD BEEN CALLED TO SETTLE DISTURBANCE. 'Led by Industrial Workers of the World, Five Hundred Workmen Battle With Officials In Hop Fields Near "Wheatland, Cal. Chico, Cal. In a fiercely waged buttle between 50u hop pickers led by members of the Industrial Workers Work-ers of the World and a sheriff's posse in the hop fields in Wheatland, twelve miles south of Marysville, Sunday night at the supper hour, six of the posse, including District Attorney A. K. Manueli of Marysville, were killed outright and a score of others are Buffering from gunshot wounds, some ol them perhaps fatally. Five hundred operatives in the hop fields have for several days been complaining about the Wages they were receiving. The trouble has been brought to an acute stage by the efforts ef-forts of the members of the I. W. W., who are said to have been grieved because there have been some Japanese Jap-anese employed in the field and whom , the employers refused to discharge. The officers were sent for and the clash occurred. It is claimed the strikers fired upon the posse aa the men were seated in an automobile. The sheriff and his men- were warned to turn back, and when the sheriff arose in the machine to address the men he was shot down, after which a miniature battle was fought. Three hundred armed men, In charge of Chief of Police Charles McCoy Mc-Coy of Marysville, are at the scene of the trouble and a company of reg nlar soldiers from tho Presidio at Ban Francisco have been asked to be lushed to the scene to quell the trouble that it is feared will follow. |
