Show Experiment Station j" Buildings Completed The government forest experiment station which was located at Eph-raim, Eph-raim, on the Manti national forest last year, has been completed and Assisiant Forester Arthur Y. Sampson, Samp-son, in charge has reported to District Dis-trict Forester E. A. Sherman that: ih--station is ready lor equipment1 for grazing- and sylvicultural ex-. periments. Fences have been con-; structed around the atation grounds and many crazing- and tree exoeri-! ments have been started. From eight to twenty men have been employed by the government in making the improvements, which consists of a barn, two residences and laboratory building ready for occupancy. oc-cupancy. The material for heating system is on the grounds and will be installed without further delay. According Ac-cording to Forester Sampson, the difficulty in hauling the material, which weighed approximately eighteen eight-een tons, will be realized when it is considered that it was hauled from Ephraim, about seven miles distant with an elevation of . 5500 feet, to the experiment station with an elevation ele-vation of 8700 feet. The station buildings are consider ed admirably situated with regard to water supply, as the presence of a spring about 1000 feet from the barn furnishes more water than is needed at the present time. From the spring to the head house the water is conducted through a two-inch two-inch pipe and from the head house to the distributing point by a three inch pipe. Considerable work has been done at the experiment station to determine deter-mine all possible species and methods of planting timber trees. Small areas have been planted at forest elevations and in various natural timber types to determine the most desirable season for planting. The western yellow pine, Scotch pine, Engelmann spruce, Douglas fir and lodgepole pine are of the species mainly experimented with, and as much as 98 per cent of the plantings have been successful. The date obtained ob-tained will be of invaluable help in in determining what species should De planted on a practical basis in the different density of stand. Enter-prize Enter-prize 1st. |
