All Persons on Board, Including a Number of American Passengers, Rescued as Result of Assistance Brought by Wireless. London. The Holland-Lloyd passenger passen-ger steamer Tubantia sank early Thursday off the Noord Hinder lightship light-ship as the result of striking a mine or an attack by a submarine. All the passengers, among whom are said to have been several Americans, Ameri-cans, and members of the crew, were rescued, it is reported. The steamer carried between eighty and ninety passengers and a crew of 300. She was a vessel of 15,000 tons. The Tubantia left Amsterdam Wednesday Wed-nesday for the river Plate and was to have stopped at Falmouth for additional addi-tional passengers and freight. Early Thursday morning wireless distress calls from the steamer were received at the Hook of Holland and torpedo boats and other craft rushed to her assistance. ' Some of these boats reached the steamer before she sank and took off passengers and members of the crew while others picked up survivors from the ship boats in which they had taken refuge after the explosion. |
