Show GREATER FORCE IS HEEDEDJNMEXICO GENERAL FUNSTON ASKS WAR DEPARTMENT FOR MORE MEN TO AID PERSHING. Field Operations in Campaign Against Villa is So Extended That It is Deemed Advisable to Send Reinforcements. Re-inforcements. . San Antonio, Texas. General Frederick Fred-erick Funston asked the war department depart-ment on Tuesday for more troops to send into Mexico, only after long consideration con-sideration of the advisability of continuing con-tinuing the operations against Francisco Fran-cisco Villa with the forces now commanded com-manded by General Pershing. General Gen-eral Pershing had suggested that another an-other regiment be sent to him, and General Funston asked the department depart-ment for what he characterized as an adequate force. It was announced at General Funs-,ston's Funs-,ston's headquarters that the Fifth cav-lalry, cav-lalry, of which one squadron is at Fort Myer, Va., another at Fort Leavenworth, Leaven-worth, Kan., and the' third at Fort Sheridan, III., would he brought to the 'border at once and sent forward along General Pershing's line of communication communi-cation to Casas Grandes. 1 The only reason given for strengthening strength-ening General Pershing's force, known toy the public generally to 'be considerably consider-ably more than 4,000, was that his field of operations had 'become so extended that his main line of communication and the subsidiary lines were much weaker than they should be. |
