Show SCS NEEDS SEEDS OF GRASES. LEGUMES With the nation needing every nound of grass or legume seed that can be harvested this year, any farmer or rancher having range grasses or irrigated plantings plant-ings that will mature seed this summer or fall is urged to contact con-tact the district office of the Soil Conservation Service in Mt. Pleasant, Utah. Since ranges were dry this past spring, the nursery division of Soil Conservation Service is having hav-ing difficulty in finding sufficient suffi-cient places where grass seed can be harvested, George C. Welch, district conservationist, stated. The Soil Conservation Service is anxious to collect thousands of pounds of seed of any of the following grasses and legumes which grow in Utah: Blue grama, slender wheat-grass, wheat-grass, crested wheatgrass, western west-ern wheatgrass, Indian ricegrass, yellow sweet clover, white sweet clover, Rocky Mountain brome, giant wild rye, smooth brome. Some of these grasses are not available on the commercial market. mar-ket. Others, sold commercially, will not be produced in sufficient quantities to meet all requirements. require-ments. For that reason, the Soil Conservation Service has developed devel-oped a seed harvesting program. Seed is urgently needed for production of livestock feed and for erosion control work, Mr. Welch said. Each year, the Soil Conservation Service gathers literally tons of seed to be used for ran je revegetation, gully control, con-trol, permanent pastures and other oth-er erosion control work. Soil Conservation Service either ei-ther pays the landowner for the right to collect seed or gives him a share of the harvest. Combines Com-bines owned by SCS can be used for the threshing, but preferably a contract may be made whereby the farmer or rancher will use his own machinery for seed harvesting. har-vesting. Since the harvesting of seed merely clips the tops of grasses and legumes and does not materially ma-terially reduce their forage value, val-ue, pastures or ranges may be profitably grazed by livestock after the harvesting is com-I com-I pleted. I Landowners are requested tc I notify the district conservationist of any seed that may be available avail-able for harvest this summem or fall. |
