Show New Gun; New Canning There is no telling what kind of rifle the infantryman may carry car-ry in future wars. The new re-coilless re-coilless weapon, put into use late in the war, will fire 57-and 75-milimeter 75-milimeter projectiles, while suspended sus-pended from a wire, with no motion mo-tion whatever. The gun weighs about 45 pounds and has the accuracy of a first-class rifle at 1,000 yards. It successfully destroyed German tanks and apparently packed a considerable wallop. Another interesting development develop-ment in the plans of the Army involves the "canning" of surplus sur-plus combat equipment in hermetically-sealed tanks, which, it is believed, will maintain the equipment in serviceable operative opera-tive condition for fifty years. The size of the project is evident evi-dent from trie fact that, if Congress Con-gress votes the funds, the Army will erect 1,191 tanks, each 55-nches 55-nches in diameter and costing $3,600, together with 274 smaller tanks, in California, for the purpose pur-pose of keeping equipment. |
