Show British Loan in U. S. Interest Prompt passage of the bill to authorize a loan of $3,750,000,000 to the British in order to assist them to rearrange their economic applecart, dislocated as a result of the war, is a step in the interest inter-est of the people of the United States. We should not forget that between be-tween the months of June, 1940, and December, 1941, the sweep of Adolph Hitler was opposed by nothing but the determination of the British not to submit to the Nazi dictator. If ever a single nation stood in the breach, fighting fight-ing for common civilization, the British people occupied the post of honor. Their valiant defense of their own nation ana its own independence, inde-pendence, while made for their own interest, redounded to the advantage of the United States which was unprepared and utterly utter-ly unable to contemplate a sue- j cessful defense of its own coun- i try against any first-class power, j The loan should be made to i support the economic system up- j on which this country has based i its affairs. Unless the British re- I ceive themporary assistance in a financial way, they will not be able to join the United States in the effort to facilitate world trade in a way that will permit American Ameri-can capitalism to function. In the offing is Communist Russia, Rus-sia, working to extend its influence influ-ence and convinced that capitalist capi-talist countries are inimical to the welfare of the Russian people. peo-ple. Certainly, in the light of a probable economic conflict and a possible military clash, it is wise for the United States to extend ex-tend succor to a valiant ally of the past and a certain ally in any similar hour of the future. The only way that the capitalist capi-talist system can meet the threat of communism, which is real, is for the capitalistic, system to function, to produce goods and to raise the standard of living for the peoples of the world. If the United States stands alone in support of a capitalistic economy, there is likelihood that the spread of communistic economy will be successful. Obviously, if $3,750,000,000 will permit the British to operate in cooperation and conjunction with us, the loan should be made, regardless re-gardless of risk, if it makes the British an effective economic ally and a source of strength in future years. |
