Show Enforcement Is Vital J The basic theory of the capitalistic capital-istic system is that the individual, individ-ual, or group of individuals, who puts up the capital for an enterprise, enter-prise, is entitled to a fair profit on the investment. This is supported sup-ported by the doctrine that free competition will regulate prices and protect the public and insure the buyer of the benefits that accrue ac-crue from individual initiative. The theory is sound and attric-tive attric-tive but, in fact, an appalling number of our business leaders have actually deserted, in practice, prac-tice, the theory of competition. They prefer to bund themselves into trade groups, organizing i rusts and monopolies and seeking seek-ing to secure all the traffic will bea without giving, in return, all that the traffic can carry. For this reason, the campaign of the Department of Justice to j enforce the anti-trust laws and to create a condition favorable to free competition, deserves the active support of all who believe, fundamentally and sincerely, in i the capitalistci system. It is designed de-signed to take from private capitalists cap-italists the power, through organization organ-ization and secrecy, to allot various vari-ous trade advantages and to prevent pre-vent the entry of others into particular par-ticular fields. It will, we believe, tend to break down some of the financial excesses that are general gen-eral in connection with various mergers, reorganizations and a-malgamations. |
