Show Know Your Cows Dairymen who make a careful study of their herds, especially the problem of establishing a high level of butter-fat production per cow usually obtain a fair income even in times of low butter prices. Low producing cows make low returns when butter prices are high and fail to pay for feed consumed con-sumed when prices are low. Two or three low producing cows in the herd will easily wipe out the profit made by several good cows. One man who set out to find what his cows were doing found that out of an original herd of 24, the best 12 cows consumed only 64 per cent of the feed provided pro-vided and returned 87 per cent of the income over feed costs. He culled the nine low cows. These cows consumed 36 per cent of the feed but returned only 13 per cent of the income above feed costs. tt is important that you know your cows. If there is a cow testing test-ing association in your neighborhood, neighbor-hood, join that. If not, establish records of your own, but in either event the information you gather should be of great benefit in put-. put-. ting your herd on a paying basis. Utah Farmer. |
