Show The Army's Career Men After spending several years at music in civil life. Staff Sergeant Harlan C. Oonrad, 38th Infantry, A decided to look for a new field in jK unich. he might b:tter himself. Ten year's ago he enlisted in the Army for Infantry Hawaiian De-partment. De-partment. Within a month's time he. had crossed the Pacific, his first travel at sea. Arriving at Schofield Barracks, on the Ieland of Oahu, Hawaii, he was assigned to the 19th Infantry, the famous Rock of Chickamauga regiment. Upon ' completion of recruiting training he asked for administrative administra-tive work. His request was granted grant-ed and he went to work at Regimental Regi-mental Headquarters as File Clerk. J Promotion came along with new , typ;s of work after eight month's , service first to Corporal, thirteen months saw nim Sergeant and after af-ter he had acted as Regimental J Sergeant Major for over a year, was appointed Staff Sergeant on his , first enlistment, an achievement , for the days when promotion was slow. One enlistment in the Army proved to him success could be had i 1 m his new field. J He. was transferred to the mainland main-land in June, 1931, and was assign-r assign-r ed to the 38th Infantry, the regi-? regi-? ment that gained it's title "The Rock of the Marne" during the World War. Here he met with new fac:s and a new type of work. He was assigned trie coveted posi-tion posi-tion of Principal Clerk, Pst and ifk Troop Schools, Army Extension I j Courses and during the summer, that of Sergeant Major, Citizen's Military Training Camp. This wcrk offered opportunity to in-0 in-0 crease his knowledge of military affairs. He has taught typists and . clerk's course in Post Schools, a course designed for those desiring to learn Army paper wcrk. He all grasped the offer to be commis-i. commis-i. sioned as a Reserve Officer and sained his end in April 1933 when ' be received his commission as Sec-end Sec-end Lieutenant, Infantry Reserve, in August last year, f March, 1936, he was again order-a order-a ed to Hawaii. He, accompanied by 4 Ms wife and daughter, arrived at Schofield Barracks, and. was as-,' as-,' signed to duty at Headquarters Special Troops, Hawaiian Division. After a short tour of foreign service serv-ice he again asked for assignment to Port Douglas and his wish was granted. He and his family occupy ? quarters on the Post, and he has ; been again assigned his former Posliion of which he is justly Proud. j Staff Sergeant Conrad says, "the -( different surroundings, new associ-J associ-J "ions, hard work, appropriate recognition for duties well per- formed, the chance of developing tvery interest and capacity places in Individual of the Army on a Plane of inevitable success."
