Show Why the $5,000,000? One of the few signs that we have seen of anything like competition compe-tition among the movie-maksi's i; the suit of Paramount Pictures Corporation against Samuel Gold-wyn, Gold-wyn, another producer, asking $5,000,000 damages because he "stole" Gary Cooper, blue-eyed star. It is alleged that Kr. Cooper was about to renew a contract, which expires in December, when tlu Goldiwyn persuasion lined him up with the Goldwyn company. There is no charge that Cooper broke n contract, but Mr. Zukor, of Paramount, Para-mount, says Mr. Goldwyn, breached geed morals and ethics and violated vio-lated the law. Just how, he. does not specify, and we have no means of knowing. Apparently, good morals mor-als and ethics have their own m'anirjg between movie producers when it comes to signing up stars for pictures. In case any one wonders where the $5,000,000 damages comes iii, we hasten to point out that $4,-000,000 $4,-000,000 is fcr damages and $1,000, 0OC is requested as a punitive award to prevent Mr. Goldwyn from doing likewise in the future. Just how they figure that Mr. Cooper is v.orth $4,000,000 to the film company comp-any in fcur years we have no way of learning. |
