Show Organized Dentists Protest Amendment Secretary of State Milton H. Welling officially denied the charges charg-es of the organized dentists of Utah, that ' the cost of the placing of the initiative amendment for the amending of the Utah Dental laws on the November ballot will a st the state $150,000. This charge was contained in a petition for a writ of mandamus filed in the Supreme Su-preme Court by the organized dentists den-tists to ccmpel Secretary of State Welling to remove the question i'i om the ballot. In his answer to the petition filed for the writ the secretary cf state declared that the cost of submitting the question of amending the dental den-tal laws to the voters of the state would not exceed $5000. The organized or-ganized dentists made the cost of the measure one of their principal objections to the submission of the matter to the voters. The initiative measure which is sought to be taken from; the ballot provides that dentists in the state may advertise their business in newspapers, magazines and other lawful publications. Under the law as it is at this time dentists are denied the right to advertise their business. The petitions for the submission of the questi:n to the people to be voted en at the coming general election were sponsored by Dr. W. L. Withers, of Salt Lake City and the People's Dental League. More than 34.000 signatures of qualified voters were on the petitions filed by the secretary of state. The organized dentists attempted to file withdrawal petitions claiming the original signers desired to have their names removed from: thr; original or-iginal petitions. This Secretary Welling denied Welding that the withdrawal petitions are not in conformity to law. The case will I be heard by the supreme court this week. |
