Show Northern Lights Stage Display On Last Sunday Pleasant Grove residents who were abroad Sunday night and took occasion to lift their eyes skyward at about 10:00 p.m. were treated to one of the grandest displays dis-plays of "Northern Lights" seen locally for many years. The same show was repeated for early risers at about 1:00 a.m. Monday morning. morn-ing. A huge red glow slowly built up behind Mt. Tirnpanogos outlining the grand old mountain with almost al-most celestial light. From the summit sum-mit shafts of red, orange and green flashed skyward almost to the zenith. The same gorgeous displays were easily observed in the northeast and northwest sectors sect-ors of the sky, flaring up and fading for a half-hour period or more. According to Encyclopedia Brit-annica, Brit-annica, Aurora Borealia is not a reflection like a rainbow, but cornea from definite places dn the atmosphere where the air for a time is luminous like a flame. But the auroral light is not due to something burning, like a gas jet; it is more akin to the light from bilions of tiny colored electric bulbs. Displays of "Northern Lights" have been mentioned in the writings writ-ings of pre-Christian Greek and Roman scientists and during the Medeival Dark Ages, were regarded regard-ed with superstitious feiar and portents por-tents of calamities to come. |
