Grid Mentor If youth, enthusiasm, willingness to learn, and the largest squad in Viking history mean anything, Pleasant Grove should have a better bet-ter than average foot ball team this year. At the first real serious workout work-out Tuesday night the genial coach was greeted by at least 50 young hopefuls; all "dressed-up" and eager to leain. So far as records indicate, this is the largest crop of candiates ever to turn out on opening open-ing day at the local school. Head Coach Ned Alger hails from Price, Utah, where he played foot ball on the Carbon High Teams. He entered B.Y.U. as a freshman, but discontinued after three years at the request of Uncle Sam. The following two years, 1951-53, were spent in the U. S. Army and included a 9-month stretch in Korea. After his army discharge, Ned returned to B.Y.U. and played football for the Cupgars last season. He received his Bachelor's Bach-elor's Degree last June. "The kids at Pleasant Grove seem eager and willing," said Coach Alger Wednesday; "but it will take a lot of hard work to develop a winning team." The new mentor explained that he had inherited in-herited a good nucleus of ten let-termen let-termen from former Coach Gil Meyer, who resigned during the summer.' These boys include, Co-Captains Co-Captains Dave Harmer and Wayne Ash, Stan Walker, Harley Hales, Keith Brown, Ron Iverson, Jerry Robinson, Jay Newman, Jay Johnson John-son and Vcrdon Walker. The first opportunity afforded for the young Vikings to show their metal will be the game with Wasatch Was-atch at Heber (today) Friday. On Friday Sept. 17, Pleasant Grove will host the Binpham High School team under the lights at the Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove Ball Park. The schedule of league games was released by Coach Alger as follows: Sept. 21, Springville at Pleasant Grove; October 1, Payson at Pleasant Grove; Oct. 6, Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove at Lehi; October 15, Pleasant Grove at Lincoln; October 21, American Fork at Pleasant Grove; and October 29, Pleasant Grove at Spanish Fork. |
