Vikings Beat Lincoln 14-0 Last Friday; BY High Game Slated for Today Pleasant Grove High School's up and coming young Vikings made it two in a row last Friday afternoon, when they kicked over the dope bucket to beat the Lincoln Lin-coln Tigers 14 to 0. The Friday afternoon fracus, played on the Lincoln campus was hailed by most sports writers in these parts as a decided upset. It was a glorious victory for the boys from Battle Creek, since football wins over the Provo Bench Lads have, over the years, been few and far between. Here's how it happened. Early in the first quarter, P.G. kicked to Lincoln; but the Tigers made no gain in three tries through the stout Viking line. They kicked n Fourth clown a poor boot whi.h traveled only 10 yeards. Hal Leu s recovered on the Lincoln 10. Lewis took the ball on the fiist P.G. play and went to the Lincoln five. On the next play Johnson pitched out to Allen and the agile Sopohmore hustled over for the score. Paul Anderson's place kick split the uprights for the extra point and it was P.G. 7 and Lincoln Lin-coln 0. For the remainder of the first half, it was a see-saw battle with the Viking line doing- yoeman work. The third quarter was much of the same thing neither team could muster a scoring punch. With the beginning of the fourth canto, Lincoln recovered a P.G. punt on the Tigger 30; and a Lincoln pass moved the ball to the Viking's 20 yardi stripe. On the next play a flat pass from the Lincoln quarterback was intercepted intercep-ted by Hal Lewis, who scampered, with the aid of some fine P.G. blocking, to the Lincoln goal line for another six-pointer. Anderson's perfect boot made it Vikings, 14; Tigers, 0. ' The game ended with Lincoln filling the air with desperation passes and unsuccessful attempts through the valiant Viking line. According to Coach Ned Alger, the brunt of the Pleasant Grove offensive attack was borne by Hal Lewis and Paul Allen. Defensively Defen-sively it was Jim Thornton, Clark Ostergaard, Paul Anderson, Nile Shumway, Leon Gillman and Gene Carson. The game was a double loss to Coach Udell Westover. Early in the first quarter Chad Moon, Lincoln's Lin-coln's all-state plunging fullback, received a knee injury which will relegate him to the sidelines for the remainder of the season. It was a tough break for the Tigers. The Vikings open league play tonight (Friday) at 7:00 p.m. with a home game with BY High under the lights at the city ball park. On Friday, September 30, at 7 p.m. P. G. entertains the Lehi Pioneers in a home-coming hassel on the same field. Both of these games should be fairly even and interesting to watch. Admission prices for adults will be nominal. |
