UP Railroad Finishing Track Laying Program for Five States Union Pacific Railroad is putting put-ting the final touches on a five-atate five-atate track-laying program that calls for an overall expenditure of nearly $4,500,000 before the 1958 construction period is ended. Arthur E. Stoddard, the road's president, reported the project encompasses a total of 86.98 track miles. Work was started late this summer and will extend throughout the first part of October. Oc-tober. U.P.'s Wyoming Division received re-ceived major attention this year, with 43.09 miles of new track installed. Other states sharing in the program include California, 24.08 miles; Nebraska, 6.06 miles; Oregon, 7.41 miles and Nevada, 6.34 miles. The program involved installation instal-lation of 133-pound rail for the 131pound rail now being- used, and replacement of 640,000 rail tics. A specialized track gang with . the latest track-laying equipment and methods has accounted ac-counted for the bulk of 1he work. Projected programming of the railroad oa.lls for continuing installation in-stallation of new 133-lb. rail along 6,005 miles of main line and important im-portant branch line track. Initial changeover was done in 1948. Mr. Stoddard, noting the tremendous tre-mendous cost of track-laying operations, op-erations, explained it requires a continuous year-by-year program to install ithe new rail and to replace rail beginning to show wear. "In spite of such costs," he added, "we feel this is a vital part of Union Pacific's operation which is geared to offer the best freight service available and the greatest degree of passenger comfort and safety." |
