Show Schools Closed on Friday, Monday; Deer Hunt, Census All of the schools in Alpine School District will close on Friday, Fri-day, Oct. 17 and Monday, Oct. 20, according to an announcement announce-ment made recently by Dr. Alma P. Burton, district superintendent. superintend-ent. On these two days teachers will enumerate the school census. The Alpine School District Board of Education feels that by having the teachers take the census cen-sus they can secure a much more accurate picture of the number of children in the district than they could receive if they hired professional pro-fessional enumerators to take it. Taking the census provides the teachers with an excellent opportunity oppor-tunity to visit the homes and become be-come better acquainted with the parents and the homes of the children. The Board is also effecting a considerable saving by asking the educators to do this work which, according to law, must be completed com-pleted between October 15 and October 31. It is fortunate for the local taxpayers that schools may recess re-cess during the first two clays of the deer hunt. In areas where school is held during these days, the attendance of secondary students stu-dents is so low that there is a large financial loss to the district. Beoause school districts receive money from the state according to the average daily attendance of students. This year the Utah State Board of Education increased by five the number of days which students must be in school. The local board of education placed these days at the beginning of the school year rather than during dur-ing the deer hunting season because be-cause the members felt that the financial loss would be too great if school were held on these days. All athletic contests and other school activities scheduled for October 17 have been moved a-head a-head one day to Thursday, Oct. 16. |
