Show jjBaHle Creek! : Breeze BY K. B. Well folks we made it! Due to the superb driving of son-in-law Joe Heidenreich, and the silent but prayerful support of the ladies lad-ies in the back seat; we negotiated negotia-ted the Alpine Loop road last Sunday Sun-day afternoon. I have heard that the scenery was beautiful. I wouldn't know personally; all I really saw was the rear end of a 1941 Chevrolet driven by an octagenerian with girl friend, and the sides of numerous num-erous and sundry automobiles as we squeaked past them on the wheel barrow track, locally advertised adver-tised as a two-lane highway. No one could ever make me believe that there is, or ever will be a car shortage. Between the summit and Mutual Dell we met I ! , over five hund-r hund-r e d vehicles; and there were equally that many in the bumper - to bumper safari going our way. To make I things more in-teresting in-teresting a broken down wrecker was retrieving re-trieving a battered bat-tered hulk that had slipped off, the road in try-) ing to get by a wide new sparkler spark-ler on an especially narrow pass. This delayed both lines for about an hour. Why they didn't leave the thing lay until the peace and) calm of Monday morning, one will never know; unless it was to im-' press the sacred American right1 to do as you please. ' Traffic officers, so usually in evidence on Sunday afternoons, were strikingly conspicuous- by their absense. This is not surprising, sur-prising, due to the fact that real headway could be made only on foot. And whoever heard of a traffic officer walking anywhere. I guess the whole thing sneaked sneak-ed up on the State Highway Patrol; Pat-rol; or they would have instituted one-way traffic for the one day at least. This might not have been a bad idea; since everyone completes com-pletes the loop anyway, in order to return to where he started from in the first place. One of these first days, I am getting up at daylight and will circumnavigate the area in the serene comfort of the cool Autumn Aut-umn morning. Perhaps in thid way I may hazard an occasional glance at the vivid panorama of Nature's wonderland. So long 'till Friday. |
