Show EarSy Twilight Imperils Young Bicycle Riders, Warns Demonstration Agent School davs also moan short i School days , also mean short days and early twilights, and an intensified problem for the parents par-ents of the 18,000,000 U. S. youngsters young-sters who ride bicycles, notes Harriet Har-riet Mulliner, Home Demonstration Demonstra-tion Agent. The National Safety Council reports re-ports that more than 20,000 children child-ren under 15 years of age were injured in bicycle-traffic accidents last year and another 350 were killed". Most of these injuries, the Council adds, were serious. Mrs. Mulliner warns that the early approach of twilight greatly great-ly increases the hazards for the bicycle rider because of the difficulty diffi-culty the motorist has in seeing bicyclists in the deceptive dusk and in the dark. Various civic groups throughout through-out the country are conducting "Lite-A-Bike" campaigns to pro-tec pro-tec children of their communities by taping fenders and handle bars with "Scotchlite," a reflective material ma-terial that reflects light back to a motorist as much as a quarter of a mile away. Almost 8,000 such "Lite-A-Bike" projects have been carried on in communities over the country. In some cities, it has been made illegal to ride a bicycle at night unless it is reflectorized. The National Na-tional Safety Council is urging parents to see that their children's bicycles are taped with reflective material. "What about your child?" asks Mrs. Mulliner. |
