Show . BUILD VOUP cuTUBE IN UTAH VALLEY.' One of Utah's School Districts has announced that prices for their school lunch will be increased relatively two cents per serving, for the current school year. Even with this increase, the program will go behind some 15 cents for each pupil serving. The deficit will be made up from appropriations appro-priations from the State and National Nat-ional Governments. In these days when there is such a dearth of money for the operation oper-ation of the academic phase of the school program, it seems rather in-consistant in-consistant that we continue to spend tax money for feeding school children. We need additional housing, and extra teachers to care for the ever-increasing ever-increasing child population, much more than we need meals served at "go behind" prices. Never in the hosbory of the state has employment at good wages been at the present peak. Never have we enjoyed such economy econ-omy prosperity. Never has the average parent been so able to provide the food that his children eat, than at the present. This is no case against serving school children a hot lunch at noon time. The school lunch program is a good thing, but there is no good and sufficient' reason why it should not be made self-supporting. The writer is fully aware that a small precentage of parents could not afford to participate in the program if the full price was charged; but tyhese children could be cared for through the regular welfare channels The great majority major-ity could and would be willing to pay what the food and service cost Money used by school districts to pay for school lunch deficits cannot be used to construct buildings build-ings nor hire additional teachers It is just a matter of using all available money for things that are most important. Greater' Utjah Valley, Inc. respectfully re-spectfully suggests that school authorities throughout the State of Utah use every precaution to get the most in educational value out of every school dollar available. |
