Show Henry Floyd Backus i j Henry i loyd Backus, R JI 2-C youngest son of Albert and Harriet .viarrott Backus was born at Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove, April 16, 1922. He attended school at Lindon & May 16, 1940, he graduated from P. G. H. S. While in high school he took part in music and dramatics. He won a Certificate of Award in Debating and Opera. He attended the B. Y. U. one quarter. He joined the National Guard, medical detachment of the 222nd Field Artillery, April 30, 1940. From this unit he received an honorable hon-orable discharge January 17, 1941. January 22, 1941 he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and entered training train-ing station at San Diego, Cal. July 22 1941. He completed a course of instruction in Group II, communication com-munication in radio, graduating from San Diego school with high honors. July 23, 1941 he came home on a furlough and on his return to San Diego was assigned to the Destroyer, TJ. S. S. Dorsey, as Radio Man, Seaman second class. He left California for Honolulu Autrust 16, 1941. November 3, 1941, was interned t Pearl Harbor Hospital, but was released Decebmber 3. On December 7 at the bombing-of bombing-of Pearl Harbor, be was called into action and saved mmv lives of bis comrades from Midway to Hawaiian Islands Tn November. 10-t?,' he was awarded a Gold Star bar for bis braverv. December 19-12 his shiD returned to San Francisco for rePairs and he was permitted to come home .T.iTv-iarv 13 1943. Ho ret'ivned to his duty and left for sea February 1st. |
