Show Timpanogos Cave Opens Next Sunday Timpanogos Cave will open for the 1936 season on Sunday, April 26, is the announcement made this week by Leo G. Meredith, secretary of the local cave committee. The number of people visiting this National Monument is increasing increas-ing each year as the story of its beauties reaches out farther among the people of the world. Last year visitors registered from every state in the union, Canada, Mexico and several foreign countries. During the corning year an extension ex-tension of the cave system to include in-clude the beautiful "Middle" cave and the old Hansen cave will be made. This project is made possible possi-ble through a federal appropriation of $10,000. Connection of the three caves by tunneling from one to another, an-other, back in the mountain, has been found to be feasible. Although their mountainface openings are widely separated, they converge so as to almost meet below the surface. Less than 150 feet of tunneling would connect the caves it is estimated esti-mated toy engineers. At the present time few people have visited the Middle cave and only by means of a rope dropped over a sheer cliff to the opening have the few gained the entrance. It is reported, however, to be as beautiful as the Timpanogos cave,' with formations as brightly colored and about twice as long as the present pres-ent system 'now open to the public. Under the project it would be fully lighted to set off its beauties, and equipped with steel stairways and mats. Completion of a loop trail provided pro-vided for under the project, will make a circuit trip through the caves possible, with entrance through Hansen cave, from which Middle and Timpanogos caves will be visited. vis-ited. It is hoped that the work will be completed before the present season sea-son is over. o |
