Show City Officials Consider Plan For Child Welfare Problems concerning Child Welfare Wel-fare work, coordination work and summer recreation work were discussed dis-cussed at the regular city council meeting Monday evening. An ordinance ordi-nance pertaining to the selling of beer was also passed. Robert Fiast, director of the W. P. A. relief in this district, Mrs. Mable Jones and the child welfare nurse for this district and Sidney P. Sperry, chairman of the child welfare wel-fare work in Provo, met with the council to ask for their cooperation in the sponsoring of a child welfare wel-fare program for underprivileged children of American Fork. This committee asked that aid be given in securing medical aid for the care of teeth, tonsils and undernourishment, undernourish-ment, etc. Mr. Sperry explained the Provo City program and gave the number of children who were found to be physically defective. The W. P. A. nurse who was present explained ex-plained the program being executed in the surrounding five counties. They asked that the mayor and council appoint a committee to care for this welfare work in American Fork. The council approved of this and a welfare program will likely be commenced in American Fork in the near future. Mr. David Gourley, who was present at the meeting expressed ex-pressed himself in the matter to the effect that not only the underprivileged underprivi-leged children needed medical aid but often the children of the more well-to-do families were in need of physical examinations and medical assistance. It was his opinion that every child in the community should be given this aid. David Gourley and Mr. Clayton, Alpine district coordinator, were present to ask the city council for aid in the continuing of coordination coordina-tion work during the summer months. The work of the coordinator coordina-tor is to bring about a better understanding under-standing between the school child, the school and the parent, and also to help the child adjust in the cases of delinquency which occur. The city council appropriated funds to sponsor, in connection with Lehi and Pleasant Grove and the Alpine School District, for this work during the summer months. Mrs. E. P. Evans, Mrs. Laura Timp-son, Timp-son, Mrs. Arsena Robinson and. Mrs. G. L. Wootton presented a petition asking that the east school property be made into a community center for the children of the east side of town and that a recreation leader be furnished by the city. The matter was referred to the public property committee to investigate. Chief Irving L. Pratt was present and asked the city to pay the fire-mens fire-mens dues to the State Firemen's Association. It was moved and carrieu by the council that this be done. An ordinance, which is published in full elsewhere in this issue, was passed allowing the sale of beer in billiard parlors. Applications for beer licenses were made by Glen Boley, Arthur Dye and Lawrence Briggs. The licenses were granted providing that the applicants ap-plicants conform with the ordinances, ordi-nances, furnish bonds, etc. The "matter of the sound system being installed for band concerts was discussed. This item was referred re-ferred to the recreation committee to attend to. They were given the power to hire the sound system if they feel that it is necessary.
