Show City Considers Raising-Tax Raising-Tax Levy and Water Rates The city tax levy in the Waterworks Water-works department is to be raised one mill, making a total of two mills for this department for 1936. This was the decision of the city council Saturday after a lengthy discussion of ways to finance the federal water project in American Fork. The water project is estimated to cost a total of $20,1S5, and of this amount the city has to raise $S459. On request, former Recorder T. A. Barratt submitted the following suggestions sug-gestions as means of raising the needed funds: 1- By issuing revenue bonds payable pay-able at the rate of $1000 per year from increased water rates made available by a ten per cent increase in the rates. 1. Increase the tax levy one mill which would amount to -1300. A six mill raise would make $7800, and if this were added to $660 utilized from the regular waterworks "budget, it would be sufficient- 3. Increase the present levy three mills which would amount to $3900. A ten per cent increase in the waterworks, water-works, making $1000 available. 4. Issuance of revenue bonds over a period of eight years and by placing a ten per cent increase on the water system the payments could be made. The road project now under way will proceed until the federal funds are exhausted and if at that time the city is unable to meet their portion, por-tion, which amounts to $1,267.50, that project will end. In addition to this amount, the paying for teams and wagons and other items involved, for the total project, the cost to the city will amount to approximately ap-proximately $3300- The concessus of opinion on the road project was that the city would be unable to bear any portion of it. The citizens at a mass meeting in December also al-so expressed this opinion. A representative group of workers met with the mayor and council members regarding the advisability of forming a joint committee to wait upon the W P A authorities relative to inaugurating projects which will insure them work in the future, and if possible, to work out a plan whereby projects could be developed de-veloped without the aid of city funds. Mayor Adamson expressed his desire to cooperate with the group in calling upon these authorities author-ities to work out something satisfactory satis-factory to all concerned- A committee com-mittee was appointed for this purpose. pur-pose. Councilman Nieholes reported that a condition at the high school existed wherein there was no fire escape on the upper floor. It was suggested that this matter be invests igated before any building project at the high school was begun. As the project must be worked at once the matter will be taken care of immediately. |
