"1800's "Someone who, if she didn't live with you, would go to the poor farm. She sits on the porch and rocks and talks and holds the babies, but mostly talks. She's not much good to do any work. She's 'all worked out' they say. But at stories she's good, though she can't chop wood, we'll keep her around anyway. "1900 "She wears long sleeved dresses with aprons starched and pretty, shehas cookies to share andcarries an air of grim determination. She's known times sohard, you cannot be bored, when she starts on her life's revelation. - "1940's " -7""-""""" " "Again life's changed and Gran's rearranged, for working outside the home's been discovered. Grandma now brings in a check, she doesn't do cookies anymore, she says, They'll make you fat,' and that's where she's at and the cookies cook-ies are down to the store. It isn't so bad 'cause Gran makes you glad when she buys you things right out of that store. "1975 "Well Grandma's changed again. She travels a lot, and talks non-stop, about the places she's been. She wears jewelry galore and has surprises in store from the visitor centers she's been in. Now Grandma has a grandpa, they live longer now, they say. He drives their rigs, unloads their boats, but mostly stays out of the way. Grandma tells him what to do and whether it's right or wrong. He has the best disposition. He just keeps whistlin' that same old fashioned song. Grandma dresses awful pretty with her hair so short and all. I just wish she'd sit and hold me. Twould be the mostest fun of all." |
