The 12 boys on the All Star team from Pleasant Grove defeated six teams across the State to earn the right to travel to Pocatello, Idaho, for the Pony League Regionals this week. , Their first game in Idaho is against Chubbuck, the host team. The game is scheduled for Wednesday, Wed-nesday, July 29 at 5:30 p.m. Other teams involved will be coming from Washington, Idaho and Colorado. The P.G. team is excited about their win, according to coach Paul Schoonover, and they hope to do well in the Regionals. The winner of this tourney will adavce to the Sectional Playoff in California. The final stop could be Philadelphia for the Pony League World Series. The first step to the state title took place in Roosevelt. The district tournament was held July 14 through 17. P.G. defeated three different teams to bring home the first place trophy. The first game was against Vernal "B". P.G. was in control early, and went on to defeat Vernal, 16 to 0. The second game involved Ver- Utah State champs in the Pony League were the P.G. All-Stras. The boys will be competing com-peting this week in the regional tourney in Idaho. Reinforcing Schoonover's observation ob-servation of the team, the seven P.G. league coaches selected for this team pitchers Eric Johnsen, Danny Hansgen and Jim Clark. The two catchers are Glen Montgomery and Danny Turner. The infield is made up of Cole Kelley, Danny Schoonover, Derek Robinson, and Nick Dorick. The outfield is controlled by Shane Smith, Donnell Hooley and B.J. McAllister. With such a fine group of boys, coaches Schoonover and Danny Smith commented that the easiest job done was coaching. They both said that it was a great pleasure. They wish the team continued success in Idaho. nal's "A" team. P.G., with some great hitting, excellent base running and super pitching, took the 5 inning game by a score of 16 to 5. The team then took the day off to wait for the other teams of play off for the right to face them. The opponent op-ponent was Roosevelt, when all of the dust settled from the day. The weather become the team's worst enemy. It rained three times that day, and it looked like the game would be postponed. The local grounds crew worked hard to repair the fields, and P.G. once again took control early and defeated Roosevelt in the Championship Cham-pionship Game, 14 to 4. This was the third straight game that only went 5 inning because of the 10 run rule. Teamwork is the name of the game, and the P.G. team proved it. The team's batting average was around .700 for the tournament. The six finalists in the State Tournament were P.G., Logan, Tooele, West Jordan, Richfield and Cache Valley. The competition was tough, but Pleasant Grove played t some great baseball. They defeated an excellent Logan team, 10 to 3 in the first game. Their next victim was Tooele, the score being 13 to 7. This set the stage for Saturday's title game with Cache Valley, the 7 inning game was hard-fought, hard-fought, with Cache Valley using four pitchers to try and throw P.G. off stride. It slowed them down a little, but P.G. finished on top with a final score of 7 to 1. Schoonover commented that the team has had no one hero. "All 12 players were very im- |
