Show g Dr. Rosquist advises $ sr. citizens on exercise By KALYN SECRETAN Farmers have been known to say, " "No pain, no gain," but Dr. Bryon I Rosquist told the Pleasant Grove "1 Senior Citizens last week, "When I y0u get a little achiness, you've reached your limit. Quit at that point and work into it." Dr. Rosquist met with the group to talk about, "Being Aware of Oneself." He demonstrated the type of shoes to use for walking or jogging. He said you "do" want to spend good money on proper shoes. As to how much walking a person should do every day, he stated you need to find out what's comfortable for you. If you develop pain in the joints, don't push it. He asked if anyone played the piano. It keeps your fingers good. Move your finger joints, grab things and loosen your elbows with mild movements while still in bed. I Movement lubricates the joints. There is a difference between bursitis and tendonitis. Tendonitis occurs where the muscles attach to the bone. The wrist and elbow are affected most often. Bursitis has to do with the joints. Inflammation of the joint capsule occurs in the shoulders, hip sockets and knees. One way to get it, is through excessive repetition, sometimes from washing the car or starting a lawn mower. Try not to do too much in one day. Spread out your cleaning, he cautioned. Posture is important, it has an effect on the spine, lungs and diaphram. Exercise will allow you to stand straight. Bad posture causes low back problems, he said. A lot of people get hooked on laxatives. If you eat fruit and vegetables it helps a lot. The doctor added that it is normal to have one or two bowel movements a day. You should drink at least five or six glasses of water a day. An exercise was explained to help with bowel movements where the stomach is massaged along the large intestine starting at the right side, up across the ribs and down to the left side like a horseshoe. A chart on "back exercise" was given to the group and the Importance Im-portance of calcium in the diet was stressed. |
