Show District approves drug abuse policy Employees of the Alpine School District are required by board policy to report reasonable suspicions of drug abuse by students. The drug abuse policy was approved at the January business meeting of the board and parallels state law, according to Dr. Clark L. Cox. district superintendent. Under the new policy, any employee of Alpine School District having reasonable cause to believe a student is taking drugs, a controlled substance, or alcohol is obligated to report usage to parents and the school principal. The policy also states that the principal "may not disclose to the student or to the parents the identity ol the educator who made the initial report," and says the educator who files a report in good faith under the law is immune from any liability. In other clauses, the policy mandates disciplinary action for students who are involved in the misuse of dangerous or illegal substances. School educators are asked to notify appropriate law enforcement en-forcement agencies and to provide them with confiscated evidence and information when students are suspected of trafficking in drugs or other harmful substances. A complete copy of the policy on 'Reporting Drug Use" can be obtained by interested persons by contacting Mrs. Janet Spencer, District Administrative Assistant, at the district offices in American Fork. |
