Local girls win state Jr. Jazz In a close and exciting game played in the Salt Palace, the Pleasant Grove Recreation seventh and eighth grade girls' Jr. Jazz team beat the Orem No. 1 team to take the state championship Saturday. The game stayed close in the first quarter, with Orem leading 10-- Then Valyn Storey couldn't miss a shot, including four foul shots. She made eight buckets in that quarter, pulling Pleasant Grove ahead to a 20-1- 4 lead over Orem. In the third quarter, Pleasant Grove pulled out to a 26 to 19 lead. When Orem came out in the fourth quarter, they were ready to try and pull a comeback, but Pleasant Grove's defense stopped them cold. Orem made 13 points, with Jennifer Schlappi making 6 and Heidi Gasman making 4. Valyn Storey again couldn't miss, making four more points. But the key to the fourth quarter was the strong defense that Pleasant Grove set up against the strong Orem shooting. Valyn Storey led Pleasant Grove with 16 points for the game. Liz Coons made 8, Heather Johnsen made 6 and Kelli Francom and Spring Smith made 2 each. For the Orem team, Jennifer Schlappi made 15 points, Heidi Gasman made 8, Julie Wilde shot 7 and Leilani Jones made 2. The final score was 34 to 32. Both teams were presented with medallions during the halftime at the Jazz-Portlan- d game Saturday evening. Center Steve Hayes presented th6 girls their awards and shook their hands as each girl's name was read off for the sold out crowd. The girls each commented on what a great experience it was to play in the Salt Palace on the same floor that the Jazz play on. They said that they would like to play well again next year and return to the Salt Palace for the cham-pionship game. Coincidentally, just before the Jazz game, Bill Hoglund and Linda Anderson from Pleasant Grove Recreation were presented with special awards by the State Jr. Jazz Coordinator Dave Wilson for ex-cellence in their organization Of the Jr. Jazz program in Pleasant Grove, more particularly for the girls' program. Pleasant Grove hosted the state seventh and eighth grade Jr. Jazz tournament this year, with it being the first such tournament in the state. Congratulations to Coach Ken Nickell and all the fine athletes on the team. Pleasant Grove again has been honored by these girls and their fine athletic ability and ex-cellent sportsmanship in com-petition. iah anglers reminded that licenses rje needed for year round fishing B iutiful spring weather, ice off fishing waters and cabin Time to go fishing. , according to DWR Assistant of Law Enforcement Craig many excited Utah anglers heading for their favorite g hole without a fishing e.
