Vikings strike out in state baseball tourney Pleasant Grove won one and lost two in state 3-A baseball play last week. Playing Springville at Ken Price Park in Murray on Tuesday to open the tourney, the Vikes stranded 12 men and fell to their Region 8 rival, Springville, 5-3. Scott Mitchell grounded into what looked to be a double play, but a throwing error gave Springville a 1-0 1-0 lead in the first inning. Mitchell made it 2-0 with a solo home run in the third inning. In the fifth, an easy ground ball was booted by the Vikes, allowing John Paystrup and Mitchell to score. Darin Ferguson then doubled off the wall and another throwing error had Ferguson trying to score from second. Greg Bahr's throw was perfect and Deon Bezzant had the ball at home waiting for Ferguson to slide. The Springville catcher tried to run over the PG catcher, a mistake on his part, and Ferguson was out, both on the field and out of the game. In high school baseball, a runner must slide if the defender has the ball and as Ferguson lay on the ground gasping for breath, the home plate umpire gave him the thumb. PG put three runs on the board in their half of the fifth when Scott Jensen walked and Bezzant got a base hit to score him. Darren Hooley was hit by a pitch, Gary Roberts picked up an RBI with a hit and Mike Albrecht loaded the bases with a base on balls. Cory Carter got hit by a pitch, the second time during the game, to force Roberts home. Neither team could score again as both Mitchell and Jeff Harris went the distance for their teams. Wednesday at Derks Field against Cedar City, PG banged out home runs by Hooley and Don Young plus plenty of extra base hits to roll over the Redmen, 16-7. Adam Taylor was the winning pitcher for the Vikes. Thursday the Vikes met Region 8 co-champs, Spanish Fork, and in a great game fell 4-3. The Dons made key play after key play to edge the Vikes. Young pitched a great game, but PG failed to get the key hits when it counted. |
