J5s!k';' early settlers came into the a their continual struggles need for fun and socials. 3"t:i bragged to each other, "I'll bet you a bag of beans that my team can pull your covered wagon up that impossible hill." It wasn't long until the pioneers invented "Bees and Fairs." Such happy times produced many a contest and the excited men would unhook from their wagons and trot their horses to the pulling field. The first horse pulling contests date back to pioneer days. The horses in those days were not a show horse but an animal chosen for his strength and power. He was used to clear the land, till the soil, harvest the crops and the only form of transportation to connect the families with the outside world. After a hard day's work, the horse would be off to show his strength and ability as a "sport" puller. Not only are the teams strong that appear in the local horse pulling contest, but they are beautiful and well trained, as well. Pleasant Grove's horse pulling contest is one of several held in the mountain west during the summer. A championship pulling contest is usually held in September at the State Fair, also.
