'West Side Story' to begin Friday The curtain goes up Friday, April 26 on the American Fork High School production of the classic musical West Side Story. The production continues Saturday, Monday and Tuesday, April 26, 28 and 29. Curtain is 8 p.m. Leading roles in the contemporary con-temporary "Romeo and Juliet" plot will be played by Julie Fish, Maria; Mike Fugal, Tony; Steve Rogers, Bernardo; Colette Devey, Anita; Ross Curtin, Riff; and Ruth Boswell, Anybodies. Members of the "Jets" and "Sharks" gangs and other supporting roles are portrayed por-trayed by high school students. Adults from the community will play the following roles: Mike Snow, Doc; Allen Pulley, Schrank; Monte Dodge, Gladhand; and Doug Jolley, Officer Krupke. Younger students from American Fork Junior High have also been invited to participate in specific .roles, according to guest director David 0. Brockbank, who is producing director of Utah Pageant of the Arts. The Pageant staff and facilities have been utilized by the West Side Story production as part of the Pageant's 1986 - Expansion Arts programs, Brockbank says. High school stage, lighting and producting staffs have worked with Pageant staff in all phases of production. In addition to staff listed in a recent article, Chris Bown, Home Economics instructor at the school will serve as costume coordinator for the production and Cathy Case has been added as a choreographer. Case has credits at Promised Valley Playhouse, Ricks College and is assistant producer of the Miss Utah Pageants conducted each year. Ty Pearson and Colette Devey have served as dance captains for rehearsals, Brockbank said. Tickets for the fast-paced, provocative musical are only $3 for the general public, $2 for students, groups and Senior Citizens, and are available at Alpine Book and Priday's Office Supply or at the door. Seats may be reserved by night only and children under five, especially babies in arms, will not be admitted. The popular musical began as a ballet by choreographer Jerome Robbins,, but was developed into a smash Broadway musical from the book by Arthur Laurence, with music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. |
