Not so Thursday as Pleasant Grove got by a pesky Payson team by that score. In fact with less than two minutes to play, the game was still close enough to be in doubt. Those last two minutes saw PG connect on six free throws and four field goals to post the final margin of victory. When the game started, Payson took the lead and was still on top 13-12 13-12 at the end of the first quarter. PG used a trapping 1-3-1 defense to terrorize Payson with a 13-0 scoring run in the second period and were leading 33-20 with :57 seconds until halftime. Coach Keith Allred then called for "one shot." But a turnover and two quick baskets by the Lions cut the PG lead to 33-24. Because of the injury to Brett Zabel in the Timpview game, Allred continued his experimentation with a starting five and gave Scott Jensen his chance as a member of the first five. Jensen came through with 12 points and 11 rebounds. "The starting job is Jensen's," Allred said following the game. "It's his if he wants it bad enough to pay the price," Allred added. Brent Larson was solid on defense and led all scorers with 17. Greg Bahr had 14, Kerry VanDyke and Jensen 12 each, Ron Simmons 6 with Mark Bronson and Korey Johansson putting in 4 points each. Playing without Jeff Harris (injured his back in the Uintah game), the junior varsity lost in overtime to Payson, 57-51. Cody Bell had 18 points in the game. Craig Hayden's 14 points sparked the sophomores to a 63-43 win over Payson. Todd Mosher had 11 and Greg Grothe 10 as the sophs continued con-tinued their unbeaten string. P.G. played at Carbon Wednesday and will host Spanish Fork Friday. Todd Simmons pulls down a rebound in the jayvee game against Payson. Simmons has been a steady player for the Vikes all season. |
