Show Two contenders spray sand as they take off from starting line at Pleasant Grove sand drags. Local talent wins at sand drags By GARY LEONARD Local racer Mike Strasburg came away the big winner in the sand drag races held last weekend at the Pleasant Grove raceway. The race, which is sponsored by the Intermountain Sand Drag Association, drew many area racers and contenders from as far away as Rawlins, Wyo. Competition is held in five main classes with several j sub-classes. Driving a Ford powered Jeep, Strasburg, 25, of Pleasant Grove, powered by a fuel injected Ford engine. Other class winners were: Dune Buggy class; Bill Steel, Sandy; Jack Deacon, Tremonton; George Steed, Clearfield and Don Miller, Sandy. Pro Comp Class: Vernon Black, Salem; Claudette Black, Salem; Larry Hancock, Rock Springs, Wyo.; Dave Wyman, Murray; Mike Strasburg, PI. Grove and Jeff Strasburg, PI. Grove. 4x4 class; Lindsay Strasburg, PI. Grove; Ron Pelton, Salt Lake City; Elroy Watson, Centerville and Donna Lou Watson, Centerville. Three wheeler class; Lenora Ure, Salt Lake City; Ben Carter, Pleasant Grove; Richard Makin, Lehi; Melinda Robinson, Salt Lake City; Rick Brirary, Bountiful and Ann Steed, Clearfield. ' Bracket class; Mike Johnson, Salt Lake City; George Steed, Clearfield and Jack Deacon, Tremonton. won first place honors in his pro comp class and went on to take the top eliminator spot with a 4.60 second elapsed time and a speed of 69 mph. Mike has been racing for five years and his whole family is involved in-volved in the sport.
