Show We'll go away for this weekend if . . . p.g. blab By MARCKLI.A WALK EH The first holiday of the summer is approaching with the long Memorial Day weekend coming up. Traditionally, Memorial Day is held May 30 but the legislators in all their wisdom decreed that we needed a nice long holiday just before school was out. I'll bet the teachers love it. The weather at Memorial Day for the past few years has not been too good. In fact it has been rainy and cold. With a little luck, since this spring has been doing lots better than the past few, it should be a nice weekend and everyone can leave town and go have some fun. Good luck! After the past winter we are all deserving of a nice weekend away from home. If we had the money we could go somewhere but since we don't you'll probably find us at home mowing the lawn. If everyone else didn't have the same idea, it would be fun to take the trailer and go up the canyon. If it weren't too warm, we could go to the sand dunes, which we like to do every spring. If Yellowstone wasn't so far away, we could go up there and watch Old Faithful blast off. If we had more time, we could go to see the relatives in Arizona who we always tell we will come to see and who we never get to see. If money was no obstacle, we could fly to Hawaii and see how the other half lives. Or, we could go to Florida and see how crime goes. Or, we could go to New York and see the muggers. I suppose the Fish and Game people will stock all the rivers and world wars and it has definitely been used. It weighs a good ton and is difficult, if not virtually impossible, to put up. It is large and very dark inside. The windows, as I recall, are mesh. They let the sun in when opened and also the rain. They are to keep out mosquitos. If a soldier had to carry this baby on his back as he wandered through the jungle with the troops, I feel sorry for him. I'd have taken my chances sleeping under the stars. Any soldier who toted this tent must now be stooped from the effort. We usually pitched this tent in the dark because it was always dark when we got out to the Uinta's where we used the thing. We put it up by the light of a Coleman lantern which we had trouble lighting. (Have you ever noticed that when you practice on a lantern in the daylight, it lights right up but when you try it at night it won't start?) One morning after we had slept the night in the tent which had taken two grown men an eon to put up, we found we had a cow pie right outside the entrance. It was fresh. It was wonderful. One time we spent three days in this dark tent while it rained and we had two small children with us. During a lull in the rain we ran outside to cook dinner on the camp stove which is always an experience, fish, and go visit Mrs. Murphy. We had coloring books and crayons and games but three days of Uncle Wiggley and Old Maid does funny things to your intelligence, which, if you had any you wouldn't be in this mess anyway. The main reason for this camping trip was so we could go fishing. The kids loved to fish as d ' father. After three days oT decided to pack up and Cli home. As we were leavin Lake, we wanted to stop am? line for just a minute. v As the father went off a creek a ways, I stayed children to help them i ?! fishing license and the kids need one. I would hurrv their hook and toss the line in I went to hand the pole to t fish would bite. If you get to do something! the holiday, enjoy it. If you dor enjoy it, anyway. Don't fSf flowers for your loved ones who t gone before. every fisherman in the family will want to have a go at it. That is alright with me. Maybe we can at least use that as an excuse to take a picnic up the canyon.- If we can find a spot. Have you noticed that over the past few years it has become impossible im-possible to find an empty spot up in the canyon on any weekend, let alone on a holiday weekend? What has happened? It is two things. One is there are definitely more people around than there used to be and, two, more people can afford to have a camper or trailer which makes camping tolerable for those over the age of 21. We used to camp in a tent. Let me tell you about this tent. We found it somewhere in our moves. It is an army surplus tent from one of the |
