Show Citizen, Press, Rev iew, Wed., April 3, 1985 - Page 19 Free J.S. Bach recital tonight A complete performance of J.S. Bach's Musical Offering, a musical feat rarely undertaken, is planned by BYU faculty musicians Wed-nesday, April 3, at 8 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. This free recital is open to the public. Musical Offering is a cycle of 13 pieces, each based on a version of the Royal Theme given to Bach by .Frederick the Great May 7, 1747. Bach improvised a three-par-t fugue on the spot, which he later notated as the Ricercar a 3. The other pieces were completed shortly after, and Bach's musical homage to the king was published in Sep-tember 1747. Though based on a common theme, the pieces are quite different in conception and style. The canonic pieces are all short or moderate in length, the Ricercars are longer. The Trio Tonata, featuring the Flute, Frederick's instrument, is a n work. The Ricercar a 3, Ricercar a 6 and the second and fourth movements of the Trio Sonata demonstrate fugal technique; the canonic pices use a variety of canon forms, and the Canonic Fugue combines both techniques. The Perpetual Canon on the Royal Theme and the Canon for Two Parts by Augmentation in Contrary Motion uses the French dotted rhythm, and both the Canon for Two Violins in Unison and the Trio Sonata contrast with the rest of the work in their employment of p mnrp "Modern," gallant style. The Ricercars a 3 and a 6 will be performed on harpsichord and organ. The Canons will be per-formed on different stringed in-struments. The Canonic Fugue, Trio Sonata and Perpetual Canon will utilize the Baroque flute. The in-strument to be used is a reproduction of an 18th-centu-flute. The program will open with a lecture by Dr. Douglas Bush of the musicology faculty. Musical par-ticipants will include Penelope Mathiesen, Baroque flute; Ruth Clay and Julie B. Zumsteg, cellos; Brett Zumsteg, harpsichord and organ; Shauna Smith, viola, and Karen J. Hughes, Laurie Olsen and Barbara Williams, violins. a Vvf i r V 1 ( A ' v y-- f j WSaKiMw."""
