Show Association votes to keep two parades The Strawberry Days Association voted in favor of keeping two parades on the opening day of the annual Strawberry Days festivities at the recent meeting of the organization. Question had been raised about the feasibility of continuing with two parades because of the difficulty in getting enough bands and the difficult dif-ficult work involved with two. Harold Jacklin, president of the association, said that expenses have been getting very high to have two parades but it has been a tradition for many years. He added that the Utah Travel Council and Utah State Fairs Association have commented on the success of the Strawberry Days . celebration and the uniqueness of having two parades. Joyce Hailing, parade chairman, said that some bands do not want to come to the evening parade because they want to be judged and judging is only done in the morning. Discussion was given to having judging in the evening for the bands and perhaps also for the floats. The Strawberry Days Association has to pay a travel fee for the bands to come and the larger bands cost quite a bit. Some bands do not want to tie up the students' day by participating in two parades, either, Mrs. Hailing noted. Merchants like the double exposure ex-posure they get from the two parades for their floats. Dennis Barnett, president of the Pleasant Grove Chamber of Commerce, Com-merce, said that he asked the businessmen which they preferred, one parade or two, and the vote was about 50-50. Because of the tradition, the number of people who get to see the parade when there is a morning parade and evening parade, and possible traffic problems if there were only one, the association voted to keep two parades. The events already lined up for the Strawberry Days celebration on June 20, 21, and 22 include the RCA approved rodeo on all three nights beginning at 8 p.m. at the rodeo grounds; the children's parade at 6 p.m: on June 19, and the Horse Pulling contest that same night at 7:30, the parades on Thursday, June20, at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.; the horse parade on Friday, June 21, at 6 p.m.; the annual mini-marathon road race on Thursday and Recreation events all three days. The association selected Mr. and Mrs. Ken GHlman to be Grand Marshalls of the parade. |
