Show I I guess we were due for a new one p.ff. blab By M AKCKI.l.A WALKER We were driven to it and we had no choice but it is rather nice. I am talking about the new vacuum cleaner we bought last weekend. I guess there is nothing too exciting about a new vacuum cleaner but it is the best one we have ever had in our 27 years of marriage. When I say we were driven to it, it is true. Our old one, which we have repaired before because it has disintegrated near the neck of the bag and the dust blows out the hole and back onto the floor rather than going into the bag, had done the same thing again. So, in an effort to put off buying a new one, I used our kid's since he was living with us at the lime. Well, he up and moved and. of course, he thought he should take the vacuum with him and he did. Knowing how poor we are, we could have gotten by for a while by just picking the dust and lint up by hand. But this seemed a little untidy when I learned by aunt and uncle from Tennessee were coming and my mom wanted my entire family to-come to-come to our house for dinner on Sunday. Under the circumstances, with the company coming and all, we decided the time had come to break down and get a new machine. So that you will appreciate how much this new vacuum means to us, picture this. corners. We still have it and the sewing machine. The vacuum we use to clean the car and the sewing machine just sits and waits for one of the kids to take it when they move away. The old vacuum doesn't have as good of suction as it used to have and the on-off switch does not work, but that is okay because you can just plug it in to use it and unplug 'it to turn it off. When we moved to Pleasant Grove, we had a fully carpeted house. The carpet man said we would be better off with an upright vacuum so we bought one. We could not afford the attachments, however, and it has been hard to do the stairs and the furniture with an upright but we managed. Over the years, we have had sales people come and show us their fancy, expensive vacuums that do almost everything for you except change their own bags. We have seen the dead skin from our bodies that has filtered down to the mattress, (I never vacuum the mattress, do you?), the deep, deep dust that I swear they suck all the way up from the basement, and all the other tests that show how poor of a housekeeper you are. When they quote you the price of $1,000 for the machine that will do all this for you and you will not be a slovenly housekeeper any more, you nearly faint but you are tern,, because who wants to be knowS slovenly housekeeper tl3 salesman might visit your ne'igtZ and say, "Hey, you should see we got out of your neighbor's can? Hee.hee, you wouldn't believe it The word could get around ' In spite of all the miracles th0 vacuums can perform, we still ril not have the money to buy one Wh we went shopping last week w went straight to the stores with th low prices and the nice, but le expensive, vacuums. Actually TV not sure they don't do as good 'a 1 as the big expensive ones d anyway. ui I don't look too closely at th bottom side of my carpet as a ml! and so what do I care what is lurkin, there and what is cutting the thread of my carpet over the years. Mav when it has cut all the way through I can use that as an excuse to get' new carpet. As it is now, even after using non-perfect vacuum all this time the carpets look very good and will probably last another good Ions while. At least they will last a lot longer than I would like, I'm sure I do not see a redecorating op. portunity in the near future due to the vacuum we have had, even though it was not the top of the line This new one will keep that trend going for some time, I know. We had not been married too long when we saw an ad in the paper for used sewing machines for only $10 at ZCMI in Salt Lake City. We went up and the sales person turned out to be one of Jer's old missionary buddies. He told us we could get a Singer canister vacuum for $30 and the sewing machine would just be $10. Well we thought that was a good idea so we bought the two. We used that canister for many years. Most of the time we had very little carpet to vacuum but it had all the attachments and was good on furniture, walls, drapes and hidden |
