',Vf X - t ' s , If Editors note: This is the second in i series of articles about the candidates can-didates for election in the Pleasant Grove, Lindon, and Cedar Hills area-. Candidates nominated by the Peoples Party of Pleasant Grove are W. Cornell Mayor for mayor, and John Swenson and Dale Warburton lorcouncilmen. Haynie is a former mayor of Pleasant Grove having served two four-year terms as well as a term as tjlycouncilman. ( During, his previous term as iiayor he represented the city on the llountainlands Association of Governments Executive Committee, Com-mittee, the Utah County Council of Governments Executive Committee, Com-mittee, the Timpanogos Special Service District Board of Directors, Ihe Utah County Solid Waste District Advisory Board and the Timpanogos Planning and Water Management Agency. He loves Pleasant Grove "City and pledges his efforts to a program of continued business and industrial development in the city. He also advocates properly planned improvements im-provements in city beautification ud services, a better cooperative effort with the citizens of the community, com-munity, and an accelerated community com-munity promotion. He believes that these efforts can k accomplished along with sound financial management. Haynie was born in Manassa, )., and has been a resident of Pleasant Grove since 1953. He was ducted in Colorado schools and ned his B. S. degree in Electrical Elec-trical Engineering from the University of Colorado. He has been employed by the "Mediates steel Corporation at state president of the Utah Young Farmers, county and state positions with Utah Farm Bureau Organization, and also served with the county and state Soil Conservation Con-servation Districts and was chairman of the County Farmers Loan Committee. While engaged in real estate he has served on the county Board of Realtors. Warburton said that helping to improve Pleasant Grove's business climate and encouraging economic growth should be one of the city council's main goals. ' He said he has a great interest in the economic well being of the community. He would like to encourage en-courage economic development that would broaden the city's tax base so -that needed improvements can be accomplished without raising taxes. Warburton is 42 years old and is a lifetime resident of Pleasant Grove. He graduated from Pleasant Grove Schools and attended BYU where he graduated with a B.S. degree in 1969. Following graduation, he taught science in the Granite School District for three years. In 1973, he and Les Southam, a lifelong friend, established Southam and Warburton Aluminum Co. in Pleasant Grove. They have now been in business for 13 years and have enjoyed doing business with many Pleasant Grove residents. Warburton married Marilyn Stubbs and they are the proud parents of seven children. He is a member of the Business and Industry In-dustry Committee on the Utah Technical College Foundation Board. He states that the is not a politician but would like to do what he can to assist in community affairs. John Y. Swenson short of keeping pace with the population growth. He states that he would like to keep his children and possibly his grandchildren in this area. For this to be possible there must be employment opportunities, affordable housing and also a community that people want to live in. He likes to live in Pleasant Grove but feels we need more businesses and need to make it attractive to higher pay industries and high tech parks. Too much of our money goes out of town, he noted. Swenson said he does not claim to have all the answers or solutions to better city government. He added that if he is elected he will probably be very suprised at how little he does Dale Warburton know about running the city. He would endeavor, however, to keep an open mind and try to work and make decisions that he can live with and would be for the betterment of the community. John is a lifetime resident of Pleasant Grove. He and Carol reside on a farm his grandfather broke from sage brush. He attended the local schools and graduated from Brigham Young University. He married Carol Stark and they have four children and eight grandchildren. John and Carol farmed in Manila for 16 years and then John went into real estate and development in which he is presently engaged. While farming John served as W. Cornell Haynie Geneva Works for the past 32 years. He is married to the former Karla Smith and has one" son living at home, a, married son living in Virginia, a married son living in Orem; a married daughter living in Texas, a parried daughter living in Provo and a married daughter living in Sandy1. He has eight grandchildren. grand-children. Swenson has stated that he would like to be involved in the future growth of Pleasant Grove City. He notes that there are many problems in a growing city and if elected he feels he could be of some value in helping make some of the important decisions that must be made if balanced growth is to take place. He feels that business and industry in-dustry in the city has fallen way |
