Show Review - Wednesday, November 13 ' 15,85 -- page 12 I ', Phone line only for emergencies Pleasant Grove Police Dispat-chers remind citizens that only emergencies should be called on the 785-333- 3 telephone number. should be called on 785-350- There are two emergency num-bers which can be used. The police prefer the 785-333- 3 number because it is faster but for many people the 911 number is easier to remember and they may call it in an emergency also. If citizens will remember to use the number for calls other than emergencies it keeps the lines open in case there is an emergency call. Writers lab students (left) Shauna Pearson and Leslie Woodcox enjoy working on the new computers at Pleasant Grove High. Computers aid PGHS ; students in writing By KALYN SECRETAN Pleasant Grove High School English students are developing their writing skills by using com-puters in the new writer's lab. Teachers Jeri Craner an5 Gaylin Rollins are excited about PGHS being one of six schools in the nation to participate in the writer's program. The school was able to obtain the computers and the HBJ writer program through a grant from the Utah State Legislature. The program was developed at UCLA for freshman college courses and Harcourt Bruce Javanovich (HBJ) bought the rights to the program. Mrs. Craner and Mr.- - Rollins became aware of the program last spring. They received the forms from the district on Thursday and they had the proposal all ready the following Wednesday. They had been searching for a way to get computers into the classroom. The proposal went before the 'State Department of Education, followed by the Legislative Education Committee. The committee received ap-proximately $1.2 million for productivity studies with the pur-pose of a study to teach more students with less monev others stories, the good and bad points are shared and reviewed before the writing assignment is finalized. There are 19 computers in the lab and sometimes as many as 30 students in the class, but the students can switch as others complete assignments. ' The school is responsible to give an evaluation to the legislature which shows computers do make a difference in the way students write. In order to give this evaluation, it is necessary to identify some of the classes as control groups. Four groups have the use of the computer while another four groups will not have the use of the computer. In April, when the final evaluation is completed, students who turned in their assignments without the use of the computer will be given extra time on the computer which hopefully will nearly catch .the students up with those who had the opportunity to use the program thorughout the year. Pleasant Grove High feels very fortunate to participate in this program and the English faculty sees this as a great strength to the English curriculum. Pleasant Grove High received $50,000 for the HBJ program. IBM gave the low bid for the purchase of computers and they were obtained directly from the company. English students participating in the program were charged a $5 fee for the consumable products. A full-tim- e aid was needed for the program. The funds were not suf-ficient, but Dr. John Bezzant helped raise money among the local businessmen for a full-tim- e aide. Mrs. Kay Honeker filled the position and the school district hired Mrs. Ella Grace as a part-tim- e aide to assist in the program. The basic concept of the lab is to give students more opportunity to write and revise each of their writing assignments. Students enjoy the program, it helps them critique their own paper. It even offers, "Writing in a Nutshell," a program to help decide what to write about. The computer summarizes the number of words and sentences in an essay, it gives the average words per sentence and the longest and shortest number of words in sen-tences used. It analyzes the use of "be" verbs and points out word usage problems. It does not correct spelling, but it does tell the possiblity of a spelling error. Mrs. Craner said the program teaches the students, "how to think." It points out the errors so the student can go back and make needed change.
