Show Review - Wednesday, November 13, 1985 - Page 8 Children learn difficulties of ballet at performance By KALYN SECRETAN Grovecrest Elementary spent a delightful afternoon last week with a performance by Ballet West. The children journeyed over to Pleasant Grove Junior High and filled the auditorium. Many were exposed to the World of Ballet for the very first time. It was a learning experience as children discovered ballet dancers can tell everything by movement. The dancers were compared to athletes, they use their body in the same way. The students discovered professional dancers start every day by taking a class which lasts for one and one half hours and the dancers spend another four to five hours, six days a week preparing for performances. Dance is a series of everyday movements set in time and space to music. Josh, a young student, was called to the front where he was told to walk across the stage. Then a performer demonstrated a walk in the graceful ballet movement. Running and jumping were other movements demon-strated by the Ballet West four-some. A part of the beautiful "Swan Lake," was performed by Ballet West couple, Tom and Karen. Hands were raised throughout the auditorium when the performers ask for volunteer participants. Several boys and girls were chosen to participate. The girls were instructed how to move across the stage in a series of turns and each one had a chance to try the movement that appeared so easy by the performer. The boys were instructed on how to jump in the air. Most of the jumping fellows landed on their seat but it was fun to watch them try. The children discovered leotards and tights, are a ballet dancers work clothes. The stretch in the material allows for freedom of movement. Ballet slippers are called, "point shoes" and just consist of card-board and fabric. The shoes do not make for instant toe dancing, it happens with lots of practice and the developing of muscles and strength. Men do not dance on point. Ballet can tell a story just by movement and students were fascinated as "The Beauty and the Beast" was portrayed in rhythm and dance. Ballet West presents the school programs so children can discover the joy of learning and want to attend the Ballet. Principal Walt Reimschiissel expressed appreciation for the use of the junior high facility but noted the growth of Grovecrest as the auditorium was filled and the kindergarten remained at the school. They have filled the school in other years but included the kin-dergarten. rtlii .fif: . J I :f I S ' W - ' - I i Ml IHWfr. Lisa Hollis practices for Young Artist Concert.
