By KALYN SECRETAN Four new teachers joined the Central School staff this year. They were introduced to the local principals prin-cipals and PTA presidents at the November Pleasant Grove PTA Council meeting. The new teachers are Donna Lauder, Melinda Perry, Janet Whelchel and Reeda Lawrence. Donna Lauder is a teacher who specialized in teaching the learning handicapped. She grew up in the San Joaquin Valley of California. She attended college in Long Beach and Fresno, completing graduate work at BYU. The mother of three daughters and one son, Mrs. Lauder enjoys reading, painting and music. . Mrs. Perry graduated from Layton High and BYU. She met her husband, Phil, while attending BYU. Phil came to the "Y" from England. They have been married 2 two and a half years and he is working on his Master's Degree. Mrs. Perry taught accelerated students at a private school in Provo before coming to Central School. Mrs. Whelchel is married and the mother of five daughters and two sons. Her oldest daughter is serving j amission, the oldest son will soon be married and the youngest child !, is only three years old. ! Mrs. Whelchel was raised in the ( ProvoOrem area. The family lived in the Seattle area for 14 years but ji settled in Pleasant Grove seven years ago. She taught previously in Orem and Needham, Mass. -Newcomer, Mrs. Lawrence was t so popular with the announcement an-nouncement of her graduation from WEP in El Paso, Texas, after the recent BYU-UTEP game. Born and raised in El Paso, she I tought school in New Mexico and Texas. She is married and the mother of one son who is 15 years old. The family moved to Pleasant Grove in June, 1984. Following introductions, the new teachers received certificates from the council. In other business, the council was asked, "Could you support a new voted leeway if it were presented next spring?" The PTA has been asked to petition for another effort to obtain necessary funds for Alpine School District. Money will not be available next fall if the leeway doesn't get passed. Each unit was asked to vote on the issue and report back to the council. A community-wide coloring contest sponsored by the Chamber of Comerce was explained by Jim Fisher. Each school received coloring entries and award winning entries will be displayed 'at the Recreation Center and prizes given. Joan Merrill and Carolyn Jacob gave a report on the Legislative Conference held Nov. 6 at the state capitol. Governor Bangerter spoke at the conference. He feels parents are responsible for a child's education. Discipline begins at home and he also feels if parents would spend one hour a day helping their child, their performance would be 10 times better. He also stressed dress standards begin at home. Other issues discussed at the conference were career ladders. They may be in trouble. If it is working in your school, let your legislative representative know because it is being questioned.
